I don’t know why I had not heard it put as simply and succinctly than I did from Sgt Don Jones in the Knoxville Police Academy, but I had not. He gave us a success speech early in our first week, and said if we followed his golden rules we would succeed on the streets. And they were spot on. There were:
- Do the right thing.
- Do your very best, each and every day.
- Treat others like you want to be treated.
As I reflect on them, I realize that these three rules, if followed, would literally fix our societal problems. We don’t need a fourth rule. Think about them for a second. If each human you knew including yourself followed them, what would happen? It would be world changing.
Want to teach your kids something to remember, teach them the three golden rules. Want to spread something on Instagram, share them and hashtag #threegoldenrules. Want to change your life? Live by them.
Do the right thing: Are you? Did you? If you did, what would have changed? Right is right, and wrong is wrong. Even in a world where we have different opinions, we know what is right.
Do your very best, each and every day: Did you do your best? No, not your shallow fake best, but really, did you do YOUR BEST? Your best is big. It is life changing. Did you do your best in your job? Your marriage? Raising your kids? Training for a competition? If not, then change that.
Treat others like you want to be treated: This is the big one. This one we fail at the most I think. But it is earth changing. Literally. If you disagree, I would love to hear why. And treating others like you want to be treated starts with you, not them. Don’t wait until it is done for you, do it to others first. “Go first” (author unknown)
If you ever thought about sharing a concept or thought, maybe this one is it. Share the article. Or copy and paste it, I don’t care about credit, I did not make the rules up. And I have not always lived by them, but when I do, it is life-changing. Want to change the planet? Post and Share the golden rules. #threegoldenrules
